Case study: client Android app

Android app for updating LPG prices on a website

AutoAlternativ needed to update the LPG price on its website from an Android phone. The app displayed the current price, let the user edit it and sent the verified change back to the website.

Problem

Changing the LPG price on a website from a phone

AutoAlternativ needed an Android app for changing the LPG price on its website without working at a computer. The task was narrow, but it had to connect to the existing PHP website and protect the update action.

Solution

A small Android app connected to a PHP website

I built an internal Android app called AutoAlternativ and connected it to the existing PHP endpoint. The user flow stayed simple, while the technical part handled the transfer between the phone and the website.

The app was built in Java on the Android SDK and communicated with the PHP website through HTTPS requests. It validated the price format, stored the website URL in settings and handled missing connectivity, timeouts and HTTPS request errors.

01The user opened the app and loaded the current LPG price from the website.
02The user entered a new price and password to confirm the change.
03The app validated the price, sent it to the PHP website and allowed the user to open the web preview.
Result

Internal tool for a specific website task

AutoAlternativ received a small Android app that connected a phone to the existing website and simplified LPG price management. The 2014 project shows custom software for a narrow operational task: quickly changing the LPG price directly from a phone.
